The SKURREL
This portrait series collaborates with individuals working in the informal economy of skurreling (reclaiming, urban-mining, waste-picking). They collect, sort, and sell recyclable materials, playing a crucial but largely overlooked role in the recycling industry. They push trolleys weighing up to 120kg, covering distances of over 30km for a daily pay of R150 to R250. The white backdrop brings a sense of formality to their informal role while maintaining the context of their labour. This project, shot in Johannesburg and Cape Town, also appears in the self-published book The Skurrel.
Since the production of this project a coordination of the industry in Johannesburg has taken place, with waste-pickers organising themselves under the banner of the African Reclaimers Organisation
